Weekly freight wrap: School holiday road safety push, QTA honours industry best, and $26M TRACK round opens

The numbers, before the narrative.

The NHVR is urging drivers to share the road these school holidays, the QTA crowned the winners of its 2026 Road Freight Industry Awards in Brisbane, and the federal government opened a $26 million TRACK round alongside a new heavy vehicle advisory panel. What changed and what to do.

What is the NHVR asking heavy vehicle drivers to do these school holidays?

Slow down, plan for more traffic around rest stops and tourist routes, and be extra alert for children near the road. That is the NHVR's message as the September school holidays begin across the country.

The NHVR released its school-holiday safety push on 17 September 2026, urging heavy vehicle drivers to share the road with the surge of holiday traffic. School holidays mean more caravans, more families at rest stops, and more unpredictable driver behaviour around heavy vehicles.

What this means for you: plan fatigue breaks before you need them, expect congestion at popular rest stops, and keep your following distance — patience is cheaper than an incident. [Source: NHVR news, 17 September 2026]

Where can drivers and operators find mental health support?

The NHVR has spotlighted mental health resources for the heavy vehicle industry, with the push timed to R U OK? Day on 10 September 2026.

R U OK? Day is the industry's annual prompt to check in with mates. The NHVR published its mental health resources for the industry that day — a practical reminder that support exists and that asking "are you OK?" is a skill. Long hours, isolation and time away from home put drivers in a higher-risk group. Lifeline is available 24/7 on 13 11 14.

What this means for you: make the check-in a standing part of the toolbox talk, and point drivers to the NHVR's free resources before there's a crisis. [Source: NHVR news, 10 September 2026]

Who won at the 2026 QTA Road Freight Industry Awards?

The winners were revealed on Saturday 20 September 2026 at the 35th QTA Road Freight Industry Awards in Brisbane, with more than 450 industry guests in attendance.

Per Big Rigs coverage, winners across the industry categories were announced at the gala, including a third-generation family-run transport business that took out an inaugural award. The awards recognise operators, drivers and businesses that lift the standard of the industry.

What this means for you: award lists are a useful benchmark — they show what "good" looks like in safety, operations and people management. If you operate in Queensland, the QTA is also your channel for events and policy feedback. [Source: Big Rigs, 20 September 2026]

What is the $26 million TRACK round and the new heavy vehicle advisory panel?

On 15 September 2026, the Australian Government opened a $26 million incentive round under the TRACK program to shift freight from road to rail and support more fuel-efficient freight movements — and announced a new formal heavy vehicle industry advisory panel for the heavy vehicle industry.

Fully Loaded reports the round is designed to take freight off roads where rail can do the job and cut diesel use across the network. Big Rigs reports the accompanying heavy vehicle advisory panel was welcomed by Senator Glenn Sterle as "an industry breakthrough".

What this means for you: if you run intermodal or are considering rail options, watch for grant guidance. The advisory panel gives the industry a formal seat at the table — worth tracking who sits on it. [Sources: Fully Loaded, 15 September 2026; Big Rigs, 16 September 2026]

Which road conditions should NSW and Queensland operators watch this week?

QTA notices dated 11 September 2026 flag three things: oversize vehicle access changes at Marshalls Creek Bridge on the Sturt Highway (NSW), a Type 2 road train trial on the Gregory Highway between Emerald and Clermont (QLD, via Emerald Downs and the Emerald Saleyards), and rail overbridge closures at Wallendbeen on the Olympic Highway (NSW).

Changed traffic conditions on the Hume Highway at Yass applied on 12–13 September and are now complete. In WA, truck drivers told Big Rigs on 21 September that potholes have returned on a recently upgraded section of the Great Northern Highway out of Perth — report road defects through the relevant state portal so they get logged.

What this means for you: check the notices before dispatching oversize or road-train movements, and photograph and report defects — roads get fixed faster when the reports are on the record. [Sources: QTA notices, 11 September 2026; Big Rigs, 21 September 2026]
